(AP) — Maikel Franco and Bubba Starling had RBI singles in the eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Cleveland Indians 2-1 in the first game of a three-game series. It was the Royals’ first win this season when trailing after seven innings. Scott Barlow picked up the win in relief for Kansas City.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Paul DeJong hit his first career grand slam, helping Dakota Hudson to his first win of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals held off the Cincinnati Reds 7-5. Hudson finished with a season-high seven strikeouts and no walks. The Cardinals won their second straight after dropping four in a row. The Reds have lost three of four after winning three straight.

UNDATED (AP) — The Broncos, Raiders and Chargers all got faster in the offseason to try to rein in the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. But the Chiefs didn’t stand still. They added plenty of speed on defense to go with all that blazing bustle on offense. The Chiefs begin defense of their Super Bowl title with a season opener against the Houston Texans. Kansas City has ruled its division with four consecutive AFC West titles. The Chiefs have gone 9-1 against each of their division foes over the last five years.

UNDATED (AP) — A new court filing shows that Big Ten presidents voted 11-3 to postpone the football season until spring. The court filing is the Big Ten’s response to a lawsuit brought by a group of Nebraska football players who want the fall season reinstated. The Big Ten announced Aug. 11 it would move its football season from fall to spring because of health risks associated with the coronavirus pandemic. The filing did not identify how each school specifically voted, but a person familiar with the outcome told The Associated Press Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio State voted against postponing the fall football season.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The NCAA has granted immediate eligibility to Iowa State guard Tyler Harris, who transferred from Memphis after last season. Harris averaged 9.9 points per game and made 138 3-pointers in two seasons with the Tigers. He has started 15 of 67 career games. Harris has scored 10 or more points 35 times, posting a career-high 25 in a win against Charleston as a freshman. He is a career 33% shooter on 3-pointers and 84% on free throws. Iowa State also added transfers Jalen Coleman-Lands from DePaul and Blake Hinson from Mississippi.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Jimmy Butler scored a playoff career-high 40 points, Goran Dragic added 27 and the Miami Heat clamped down defensively in the final three quarters to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 115-104 in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Bam Adebayo had 12 points, 17 rebounds and six assists for the fifth-seeded Heat, who are 3-1 overall against the top-seeded Bucks this season. Khris Middleton scored 28 points for Milwaukee, which also dropped Game 1 of its first-round series against Orlando.
