IA COVID-19 update, 8/19/20: Deaths statewide top 1,000

(10-a.m. 8/19, 24-hour update): The number of people in Iowa who have died from complications of COVID-19 has topped 1,000, including the first reported death in Adair County. The Iowa Department of Public Health reports 16 more deaths, for a total of 1,003, with 701 of those persons who died having a pre-existing medical condition. Officials say 532 of the deaths happened at long term care facilities. across the State

There have been 881 additional, Positive COVID-19 cases since 10-a.m. Tuesday, for a total of 53,497. Cass County reports one new positive COVID-19 case for a total of 96. Adair, Guthrie and Shelby County each have two new cases. Pottawattamie County reports three more positive cases of the virus. The IDPH says 3,948 residents were tested over the past 24-hours, with 3,403 having tested negative, for a positivity rate of 9.1%. The total number of residents tested to-date, is 569,968. 41,968 Iowans have recovered from the virus, to-date.

There are currently 299 COVID-19 patients hospitalized across the state, up 12 from the previous day. IDPH lists 90 patients in intensive care, that’s 4 more than Tuesday. There were 46 people admitted to hospitals across the state since Tuesday, compared to 31 the previous day, and 33 patients on ventilators. In western/southwest Iowa: 15 are hospitalized with the virus (up 2 from Tuesday); 6 are in an ICU, and five people were admitted, compared to none previously. One person remains on a ventilator.

There are coronavirus outbreaks in 33 of Iowa’s long-term care facilities, up two from Tuesday. The IDPH reported 967 positive cases and 583 recoveries within those facilities.

Here are the latest positive case numbers for southwest/western Iowa since 10-a.m. Tuesday (County; Positive Case #’s; number of persons who have (recovered); {deaths since the outbreak began}. Counties with changes have highlighted numbers over the previous 24-hours:

  • Cass County: 96 cases; (75); 2 deaths
  • Adair County: 42 cases; (20); 1 death
  • Adams County: 17 cases; (16)
  • Audubon County: 30 cases; (21); 1 death
  • Guthrie County: 150 cases; (113); 5 deaths
  • Montgomery County: 66 cases; (53); 4 deaths
  • Pottawattamie County: 1,456 cases; (1,115); 30 deaths
  • Shelby County: 195 cases; (180); 1 death.
