Hail pounds parts of southwest Iowa Thursday evening

The first day of spring (Thursday) brought the first round of severe storms to the region, which was pounded by hail, especially in Page, Montgomery and Mills Counties.

  • 1-to 2-inch diameter hail (Quarter to egg size) was reported near Villisca and in Red Oak at around 5:53-p.m.
  • 1.75″ (Golf ball size) hail fell near Stanton at around 4:30-p.m.
  • 1.5″ diameter hail (Ping-pong size) fell in NE of Essex at around 4:14-p.m., & N. of Clarinda at about 5-p.m.
  •  1.25″ hail (half-dollar size) was reported in Red Oak just before 6-p.m.
  • Quarter-size and nickel-size hail was reported near Malvern, Corning, Red Oak and elsewhere at different times during the late afternoon hours, as well.

There have been no serious reports of damage, as last check.
