Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

AMES, Iowa (AP) — For most teams, losing nearly 70 percent of their scoring and over 60 percent of their rebounding would mean that a rebuilding season was imminent. At Iowa State, it’s just the latest chance to give a new batch of players a crack at the Big 12 title. The Cyclones (23-12 in 2018-18) saw four key contributors that averaged a combined 53.1 points, 18.8 rebounds and 10.4 assists per game move on after last season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have ruled quarterback Patrick Mahomes out for Sunday night’s showdown with the Green Bay Packers because of his dislocated right kneecap. Mahomes, who hurt the knee last Thursday night in Denver, was limited participant in practice all week. The Chiefs decided to give the reigning league MVP at least one game off as he recovers from an injury that can sometimes sideline a player for several months.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The prime-time showdown between the Packers and Chiefs was supposed to be a marquee matchup between quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes. But when the Kansas City quarterback dislocated his kneecap against Denver, those prospects went out the window. Now, it’s merely an intriguing test of division leaders.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky coach Mark Stoops should expect a hard-fought game against Missouri based on the teams’ recent history. The Wildcats have won the last four meetings against the Tigers, with the past two decided by six points or less. The Wildcats look to extend their streak, but Stoops expects Mizzou to make every yard and point hard to come by.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — There has been more attention on Kansas basketball over the past six months in court rooms than on basketball courts. Coach Bill Self and the rest of the No. 3 Jayhawks are ready for that to change. The season is on the horizon. The focus can get back on the game, and a season in which expectations are soaring for the Jayhawks. The season opener is Nov. 5 against fourth-ranked Duke in New York City.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Bruce Weber walked into the Kansas State practice gym a year ago knowing precisely what to expect, thanks in part to five returning starters and a bevy of experience sitting on his bench. But after three key seniors departed from a team that tied for the Big 12 title last season, Weber is still uncertain what to expect when the season opens Nov. 5 against North Dakota State.
