Atlantic makes big plays to top Kuemper Catholic 20-18

The Atlantic Trojans football team played their most complete game of the season and topped the Kuemper Catholic Knights 20-18 on Friday night in Carroll.

The Trojans jumped out to an early 10-0 advantage in the first quarter. Tyler Moen kicked a 26-yard field goal on the Trojans first offensive possession. He added a 2 yard touchdown run on their second possession of the game to give the Trojans the early advantage that they would not relinquish. Kuemper Catholic answered the Moen touchdown with a 13-play, 80 yard drive that was capped by a Cole Collison 1 yard touchdown run on 4th and goal. The Trojans blocked the extra point to make it 10-6 at halftime.

The second half started slow with the two teams trading 4 punts. Tyler Moen then ripped off an 80 yard touchdown run on the third possession of the half for Atlantic to give the Trojans a 17-6 edge. Kuemper answered with a touchdown drive finished by a 10 yard pass from Collison to Blaise Gunnerson. The Trojans stuffed the two point conversion attempt to keep the score at 17-12. Atlantic then went on a 13 play, 74 yard drive that was capped by a 34-yard field goal by Moen to give the Trojans an 8 point lead.

Kuemper Catholic was left with 3:19 to try to drive to tie the game. The Knights were able to march 60 yards in 10 plays to punch a score in with just :31 seconds left. Collison dove in on a one yard run to get the score. It then came down to the 2 point conversion try to tie the game. The Knights pitched the ball to Kyle Berg on a sweep around right end. He built some momentum but was met at around the 2 yard line by Moen and a couple other Trojans to bring him down short of the goal line.

The Trojans then secured an onside attempt by the Knights and took a couple of knees to secure the win.

Moen had another sensational outing with 224 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns and the two big field goals. The Trojans outgained the Knights 331-269 on the night.

Atlantic improves to 2-3 and opens up 2A-District 9 play with a win. They will travel to face a ranked OA-BCIG team in Ida Grove next week. Kuemper Catholic falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the district. The Knights travel to Greene County next week.
