Shelby County man faces felony homicide by motor vehicle & DUI charge

A 28-year old Shelby County man was being held over the weekend in the Douglas County, NE., jail, following a fatal accident that occurred Saturday night near Bennington, NE. Tony Kenkel, of Earling, faces felony motor vehicle homicide and DUI- causing serious bodily injury, charges, in connection with a crash between a pickup and car that resulted in the death of 21-year old Joseph Daniels, of Council Bluffs.

Daniels died at the scene of the accident that took place at around 7:30-p.m.  A second person in the car, 21-year old Thomas Griese, of Council Bluffs, was last reported to be in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said the two men were in a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000 GT sports car on Highway 36 near Lake Cunningham Park Road, when a black 2017 Chevy Silverado pickup truck driven by Kenkel, crossed the median and hit them head on. Investigators said Kenkel had been drinking.

Bennington Road remained closed from 84th St. to 96th St. until 1:15-a.m., Sunday.
