IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit alleging Gov. Kim Reynolds broke the law when she transferred $13 million from a reserve fund to balance the state budget. The lawsuit was filed against Reynolds and Department of Management director Dave Roederer by Rep. Chris Hall, D-Sioux City, the ranking member on the House Appropriations committee. It asks a judge to declare that Reynolds’ proclamation ordering the fund transfer in September was illegal and to void “all actions” taken as a result

OSCEOLA, Iowa (AP) — Osceola police say crews have found a body in a house destroyed by fire Sunday. KCCI-TV reports police said Tuesday that fire crews had found the body in the remains of the structure in the southern Iowa city. The body was taken to the Iowa State Medical Examiner to be examined and identified. The fire’s cause remains under investigation.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Attorney Brad Hart has been sworn into office as mayor of Cedar Rapids. Hart became mayor of Iowa’s second-largest city Tuesday morning, nearly a month after defeating former City Council member Monica Vernon in a runoff election. Hart says his priorities would include flood protection, affordable housing and hearing from the city’s young people about their needs.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines saw the highest number of homicides in nearly 40 years in 2017. That’s according to police data. The 25 homicides last year in Iowa’s largest city is the greatest amount since 1978, when 27 people were killed. The Des Moines Register reports that law enforcement officials attribute many of the homicides to soured personal relationships, gang-related violence and a trend of young adults using guns to solve conflicts and social media disputes.
