DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Officials say a plane carrying nearly 200 people from Chicago to Phoenix made an emergency landing at the Des Moines airport because of smoke in the cockpit. Kevin Foley, the executive director of the Des Moines International Airport, says the plane was diverted to Des Moines on Friday morning and landed safely.
Andrew Wall, an airport operations supervisor, says the American Airlines flight had taken off from Chicago, about 300 miles east of Des Moines. All the passengers got off the plane safely. Officials are investigating what caused the smoke in the cockpit. KCCI reports that the plane had about 190 people on board. Emergency crews were called to the airport around 11:30 a.m.
