Audubon High School played host to a Class 1A District 14 boys basketball doubleheader on Thursday night. In the first game it was the Exira-EHK Spartans getting a win over Coon Rapids-Bayard 46-33. The Spartans used a patient offensive game to get a lot of points in the paint, led by Dakota Rold who finished with 12 points, 10 of those coming in a low scoring first half. The Spartans led 18-11 at the break, saw their lead cut to 5 at the end of the third but finished strong especially from the free throw line to get the win. The Spartans were 12-13 from the free throw line in the 4th quarter and shot 19-26 for the game. Coon Rapids-Bayard was led by 13 points from Ben Obert in the loss. The Spartans also got 12 points from Drew Buckholdt and they will now face Paton-Churdan in a district semifinal on Tuesday, February 23rd. That game will be the first half of a doubleheader at IKM-Manning High School and will tip at 6:30pm that evening.
In the nightcap the Audubon Wheelers rode tough defense and the hot hand of Tyler Riebhoff to a 69-50 win over Glidden-Ralston. The Wheelers led by 9 at halftime and took full control in the third quarter increasing their lead to 17. Sophomore Tyler Reibhoff had a terrific game dropping in 28 points on a mix of four threes and plenty of buckets down low. The Wheelers’ pressure defense also proved to be key as they forced multiple turnovers during two first half scoring spurts that forced Wildcat timeouts. Glidden-Ralston finished their season at 11-11 and were led in the loss by Noah Borkowski with 14 points. The Wheelers improve to 16-6 and will now play at IKM-Manning on Tuesday night at 8:00pm in a district semifinal.
