Western IA soldier who died in CO to be buried Monday

A soldier from western Iowa who died last month while on duty in Colorado, will be laid to rest Monday, in Pottawattamie County, according to the Daily NonPareil.

Officials with the Army at Ft. Carson, in Colorado Springs, said in a Press Release “Sgt. Matthew D. Reynolds died on post at Fort Carson on June 22. The incident is under investigation. According to a GoFundMe.com campaign set up by a friend, Reynolds’ death occurred during a training exercise, but Fort Carson officials declined to comment further beyond their original statement.

Reynolds was a 29-year old Carter Lake native, who joined the Army in July of 2008. He was deployed to Iraq from October of 2009 to June of 2010, and also served in Afghanistan, from August of 2013 through April of 2014. His service took him to Germany as well. Reynolds arrived at Fort Carson in August of 2014.

He leaves behind his wife, Tina, a Council Bluffs native, and their children Dominic, Nickolai and Cammy Jo. A visitation is planned from 1 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. Reynolds’ funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with military rites and burial at Garner Township Cemetery.

A luncheon at Mabrey Park, 17th and Willow streets in Carter Lake, will follow the service.
