MANGILAO, Guam (AP) — A member of the Iowa National Guard has drowned while swimming in Guam. The Iowa National Guard said in a news release that 20-year-old Senior Airman Drew Bellairs of Osage was swimming at Marbo Cave in Mangilao, Guam, Saturday when he drowned.
Col. Greg Hapgood said Bellairs and a group of friends were swimming for fun when Bellairs swam into the air pocket of a cave and was not able to get out. His friends retrieved scuba gear to try and help him out of the area, but he was unresponsive when they returned.
Bellairs was serving on temporary duty while assigned to the 506th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. He was a student at Iowa State University.
