The Iowa State Patrol has released more information pertaining to a motorcycle chase that ended Saturday night in Elk Horn. We first told you about the chase on our web and social media pages, and during the Sunday morning news. Sgt. Bryan Michelson, with the Patrol’s District 3 office in Council Bluffs, told KJAN News a man who identified himself as 24-year old Tyler John Cross, of Lincoln, Nebraska, was arrested on multiple felony and traffic charges following the pursuit that began as a traffic stop on Interstate 80 eastbound  near the Shelby exit, at around 9:35-p.m.

The Trooper attempted to stop two motorcycles that did not have license plates. Both cycles pulled over onto the shoulder, but then sped-off. One of the cycles took the Avoca exit and got back on the interstate westbound, while the other continued eastbound.

The Trooper chased one of the cycles, a 2004 Kawasaki  ZX-1000 Racer along I-80, and continued to follow the motorcycle after it went through the median and resumed and easterly direction,  at speeds of up to 108-miles per hour. The pursuit continued onto northbound Shelby County Road M-47 before turning east onto F-58 into Elk Horn, where the driver (later identified as Cross) drove down sidewalks, through private property and a cemetery before losing control of the bike near a t-intersection in an alley near the Elk Horn High School. He then took off on foot with the Trooper in pursuit.

The man was eventually tackled, but allegedly offered resistance. A deputy deployed his stun gun.  Cross was taken taken into custody and brought to Myrtue Memorial Hospital for treatment as a precaution, before being released to law enforcement.

During an investigation, it was determined the man had a loaded handgun in his backpack with the serial numbers ground off, along with more one-half pound of meth, two bags of marijuana, prescription pills, drug paraphernalia, scales and cash, as well as multiple cell phones.

Cross remains in the Pottawattamie County Jail on $100,000 bond. He currently faces charges that include Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Deliver, a drug tax stamp violation, Prohibited Acts, Eluding, Personal possession of a controlled substance (not marijuana), and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Additional charges are possible.

Michelson says the other motorcyclist got away. The incident remains under investigation.
