An elderly  couple from Irwin were injured during a single-vehicle crash in Shelby County, Wednesday afternoon, north of Irwin. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office says a 2002 Chevy Silverado pickup driven by 80-year old Gerald Gross, of Irwin, was traveling south on Shelby County road M-47 at around 2:20-p.m., when the pickup went out of control on the ice and snow covered road. The vehicle entered the east ditch and hit a culvert before vaulting into the air and coming to rest in a field.

Gross, and his wife, 77-year old Martha Gross, were trapped in the pickup and extricated by rescue personnel before being transported to Myrtue Memorial Hospital, in Harlan. Gerald Gross was listed in critical condition and flown by helicopter to the Nebraska Medical Center, in Omaha. His wife was admitted to Myrtue for treatment. A report on her condition is not available.

Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by crews from the Irwin, Defiance and Manilla Fire Departments, as well as Medivac Ambulance.
