DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An effort to improve access to broadband Internet in rural Iowa failed in the Legislature this spring, but Governor Terry Branstad is optimistic a revised proposal can succeed next year. Branstad, who is running for re-election, has offered a rebooted version of his broadband proposal. Branstad calls it the “Connect Every Acre” plan.

DENISON, Iowa (AP) — A northwest Iowa firm is prospering by creating concrete security barriers for government buildings and other projects. The Sioux City Journal reports Petersen Manufacturing’s custom-made concrete planters and benches help keep office buildings and theme parks nationwide safe. Sales manager Paul Schumacher says the company has developed ways to make the concrete barriers more attractive. And in recent years, there has been renewed interest in the company’s livestock waterers.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa judge increased a Marshalltown man’s bond to $1 million after he was charged with killing his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter. The Marshalltown Times-Republican reports the new bond amount for Branden Collins was set Saturday. He was charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment on Friday.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — The man killed outside a Waterloo night club this weekend has been identified as a 35-year-old Twin Cities man. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports Sanders Funeral Service identified the victim of Saturday’s shooting as Celio Antonio Posada of Minneapolis. The shooting outside El Senior Tequila Nightclub was reported around 12:15 a.m. Saturday.
