ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Adams homered for the third time in three games — all with his father in attendance — and Matt Holliday also went deep, helping the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-2 victory and series sweep Sunday over the Washington Nationals. Adams gave St. Louis a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run shot on an 0-2 pitch, his sixth homer of the season. Adams’ father, Jamie, has been visiting from Pennsylvania on Father’s Day weekend.

Holliday put St. Louis up 3-0 in the third. Jaime Garcia pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and a run for St. Louis. He struck out six and walked two. Trevor Rosenthal got the final out for his 20th save. Washington’s Doug Fister had his five-start winning streak snapped.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals said reliever Carlos Martinez will make his second career start against the New York Mets on Monday in place of Adam Wainwright. Wainwright will miss the start because of tendinitis in his pitching elbow. He is 9-3 with a 2.15 ERA in 100 1-3 innings this season. He had an injection on Wednesday after an MRI pinpointed the trouble area in the back of his elbow. General manager John Mozeliak said it was like “tennis elbow.”

Wainwright was a 19-game winner last year and won 20 games in 2010. This season, Martinez is 0-3 with a 4.67 ERA in 30 appearances with no starts. He started one game in 2013. He went 4 2-3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers, allowing four runs.
