Storage shed fire in Atlantic, Sat. evening
November 2nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson
Firefighters in Atlantic were called to the scene of a storage shed fire Saturday evening. The call was dispatched at 6:21-p.m. for an unknown-type fire in the alley just south of the Post Office, between 5th and 6th Streets.
First Assistant Fire Chief Russell Peck told KJAN News when they arrived, there was a lot of thick, black smoke coming out of the second of six storage units on the north side of the structure. Inside the unit was several oil cans other such materials that apparently created the thickness of the smoke.
Peck said the back window to that unit was broken and flames were shooting out. Firefighters entered the unit and knocked down the flames within about 20-minutes, and began clean-up duties while making sure there were no other hot spots.
Peck said the cause of the fire remains undetermined, and investigators will be on the scene Sunday morning when there is more available light, to try and narrow down the cause. However, Peck said that because there was no electricity to the building, an electrical fire could be ruled out.
