March 10th, 2012 by Ric Hanson
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Mount Vernon’s Jake Timm buried three free throws in the final 19 seconds left and the Mustangs rallied to beat St. Edmond, Fort Dodge 48-45 in the Class 2A title game. Micah Russell scored 19 points to lead fourth-seeded Mount Vernon (23-4), which trailed by 15 points before roaring back to stun the unranked Gaels. Timm missed from the line with 7.7 seconds left, and St. Edmonds star Nick Clark dashed down court looking to launch the potential game-tying shot. Clark’s pass was knocked away as time expired. Clark had 24 points to lead all scorers for St. Edmonds (20-7). Timm made just three of seven from the line, but those three turned out to be the difference as the Mustangs won their first state title in 39 years.
