The senior made a pair of late free throws to help seal the game as Iowa beat Illinois 64-61 in the first round of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament in Indianapolis. Gatens led the Hawkeyes with 20 points as they rallied from a four point halftime deficit. Freshman Aaron White had 13 points for Iowa. The biggest difference in the game was free throw shooting, Iowa was 12 of 19 from the stripe, the Illini never shot a free throw. Meyers Leonard led Illinois with 18 points, while D.J. Richardson and Joseph Bertrand each had 11. Iowa out-rebounded Illinois 34-32 and the Hawkeyes had nine steals and only turned the ball over six times.
