CLARINDA, Iowa (AP) — Officials are investigating a small plane crash in southwest Iowa that killed the pilot. Page County Sheriff Lyle Palmer says 53-year-old Jac Crain of Clarinda was killed in the crash around 1:30 p.m. yesterday. The wreckage of Crain’s BD-4 plane came to rest about 100 yards away from a farm house about 2 miles southwest of Clarinda.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa lawmakers are unsure whether to support or oppose a proposed increase in the fuel tax. The tax, which stands at 21 cents a gallon, was last raised in 1989. A Senate panel has approved a 10-cent-per-gallon increase and a House panel has backed an 8 cent increase. It’s a difficult issue for lawmakers, especially Republicans, because powerful GOP groups have taken strongly opposing views on the issue.
