FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3

The Cass County Conservation Board is holding a FREE Family Movie in the Park at the Cocklin Fish Farm in Griswold on September 3rd at 9 pm. Come out for a great family friendly movie “WALL-E.” Please bring your own lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the movie under the stars. If rain, it will NOT be rescheduled. Dress for the weather and all ages are welcome.

 

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

The Adair County Health Foundation hosting the 2nd Annual Walk For Pink on September 4th at the Greenfield Lake starting at 9 am. The cost is $20 for adults which includes the run/walk, bag and snacks and for the kids who choose not to do the 2 mile walk the cost is $5 which includes a short run contest and snacks. Registration is from 8-9 am.

Wiota Pinochle Party will be held on September 4th at 6:30 at the Wiota Community Building. Bring a snack to share and everyone is welcome to attend.

 

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

Exira Mason's Labor Day Breakfast will be held at the Brayton Town Hall on September 5th from 8:30-12:30 pm. They will be serving eggs, pancakes and sausage for an all you can eat free will donation.

 

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 6

Join the Lewis Town & Country Boosters and the Pancake Man on September 6th from 7:30-10:30 am at the Lewis Community Center. They will be serving pancakes and sausages, juice and coffee for a free will donation.

 

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

Walk to School will start on September 7th and end on October 15th each day of the week for Atlantic, Massena and Anita. For complete details:

 

Atlantic Walk to School Information:

There are four locations in Atlantic where the walk to school routes begin:

  • 1.       Community Building
  • 2.       Sycamore Village Trailer Court
  • 3.       Pellet Park
  • 4.       Redwood Dr & 14th St.

The routes will stop at Washington Elementary School.  Students who go to Schuler and the middle school can walk from Washington down to their school following the walking path that goes past the football field. We invite students that are in grades K-8th grade. 

 

Each walking group will have 2 volunteers walking with them to keep the kids safe.  Volunteer walkers will also have on bright, reflective shirts or vests on. 

 

Volunteers will be at each location by 7:15am, and each walking route will start walking at 7:30am.  Make sure there is a volunteer at the walking location before dropping your children off to walk. 

 

Anita Walk to School Information:

There is one walking route in Anita, and the route starts at the Anita Public Library.  The walking route will end at the Anita Elementary School. We invite the elementary students from Anita to participate.  

 

Each walking group will have 2 volunteers walking with them to keep the kids safe.  Volunteer walkers will also have on bright, reflective shirts or vests on.

There is one walking route in Massena, and it starts at the Massena City Hall. The walking route will end at the Massena Elementary School. We invite the elementary students from Massena to participate.

 

Each walking group will have 2 volunteers walking with them to keep the kids safe.  Volunteer walkers will also have on bright, reflective shirts or vests on. 

 

Volunteers in Massena will be at the starting location by 7:35am, and the group will start walking at 7:50am.  Make sure there is a volunteer at the walking location before dropping your children off to walk. 

 

For Atlantic, Anita, and Massena:

Also, if the weather is not suitable for walking (raining, or too cold), please listen for Walk to School cancellation on KJAN. You can also look on the radio station website for cancellations. Plus, walk to school cancellation will be called by 6:30am.

Hunter Safety Education classes will be held on September 7th, 9th from 6:30-9 pm and on September 11th from 8am-noon at the Harlan Fire Hall, Cyclone Ave & 9th St. You must attend all 3 classes to get hunter ed certificate. Call Iowa Western Community College at 712-755-3568 to pre-register and to get your books in advance. This will be the only hunter safety education class offered in Shelby County this year.

 

Senator Kim Reynolds will appear at a candidate event on September 7th at the home of Mark & Susan Wedemeyer, 1911 East 14th Street in Atlantic. The event will begin at 7:00 pm and include food and drink for a freewill donation to the Cass County Republican Party. The event is casual and if the weather is nice, it will be held outdoors, so bring your lawn chairs. Other Republican candidates expected to attend include State Senator Nancy Boettger and State Representative Jack Drake along with local county candidates. Everyone is invited. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

The next Brown Bag Lunch Series: “W is for Windmill” is scheduled for September 9th at 12:00 pm in the Bro Dining Room.  Lisa Riggs of the Danish Windmill will take you on a “virtual tour” of windmills around the world. This program is free to the public. 

The Wallace Foundation is having a Fall Field Day on September 9th from 10:30-3:30 pm at the ISU Armstrong Research Farm in Lewis. Registration is free and you may register at 10:30 am. There will be field demonstrations, complimentary lunch, presentations and exhibits.

 

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

The Cass County Conservation Board is holding a “Mysterious Monarchs” Program at the Campground Shelter at Cocklin Fish Farm Park in Griswold on September 10th at 7:00 pm AND at Camblin Addition Shelter at Sunnyside Park in Atlantic on September 11th at 2:00 pm. The Cass County Pheasants Forever Chapter is looking for people who are interested in helping to restore upland game habitat in Cass County. Specifically the Chapter is looking for persons interested in serving on the Cass County Pheasants Forever Board of Directors. The Chapter will sponsor a free trap shoot at the Mayflower Sportsman Club on September 12th at noon. Lunch will be served and prizes will be awarded during the shoot. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

The Cass County Conservation Board is holding a “Mysterious Monarchs” Program at the Camblin Addition Shelter at Sunnyside Park in Atlantic on September 11th at 2:00 pm. FREE! A benefit poker run for Al Brown will be held on September 11th starting and ending at The Middle Of Nowhere Bar & Grill in Cumberland from 9-11am, all vehicles are welcome. There is free camping Friday & Saturday. A street dance will be held from 4-7:30 pm with MOJO and from 8-12 pm with The Jason Reed Band. Evening food by Stoney Buck BBQ. Persia Demolition Derby will take place on September 11th at 1 pm at the Persia Ball Park. There will be big car, front wheel drive small car and pick ups and even a combine demo. All entry feed paid back to drivers. Cost is $25 for driver and car entry fee and a pit pass is $15. General admission is $7 for adults, $3 for kids 5-12 and kids under 5 are free. The United Church of Christ in Atlantic (1607 Hazel St.) will present a dinner theater, "Murder, Mayhem and Marshmallow Salad" on September 11th & 12th at 6 pm. Tickets are on sale until September 7th for $20 at Geis Perry Jewelry, Cass County Abstract Office or at the church.

Brayton Amerian Legion Post #350's membership steak fry will be held on September 11th at the Brayton Community Center. Choice of Steak or Chop Dinner with sides for $8 from 5-8 pm. Free dinner for all members of post #3550 with paid dues for 2011. New members are always welcome, everyone is welcome for dinner.

 

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

St. Mary's Catholic Church in Anita Annual Chicken Dinner featuring Staley's Chicken will be from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Serving mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, roll, homemade desserts and salad bar.  Cost is $8.00 for adults, $4.00 for children 5-12 years old and four years old and younger can eat free.  Carryouts are available from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.

Nathaniel Hamlin Park Fall Festival will be held on September 12th from 10 am to 4 pm. Vendors of all kinds wanted, the cost is just $5 to sell and you will need to bring your own table. Dad's Belgian Waffles will be served on September 12th at the First United Methodist Church in Audubon from 11:30 - 1:00. The cost for adults is $6.00 and children 6-12 is $3.50 and children 5 and under are free.

Exira Fire & Rescue open house and men and women's waterfights will be held on September 19th with registration at 1 pm and waterfights at t 2 pm. Refreshments & BBQ will be served at 5 pm for a free will donation. Trophies will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

 

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25

Bowman Chapel's Harvest Dinner & Bazaar will be held on September 26th. They will be serving a roast beef dinner from 11-1:30 pm with sweet corn, green beans, mashed potatoes & gravy along with salads, pies & desserts. Cost is $7 for adults and $3 for kids 10 and under. Some items in the bazaar include quilts, salsa, spaghetti sauce, jams & jellies, breads, table runners and more.

The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce says the annual "Coca-Cola Days" parade will take place September 25th, beginning at 4-p.m.  For the first time ever, the parade will be open to all entrants. All entries need to have some element of Coca-Cola in their theme, and only the children's entries will be judged. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 children's entries. Eagles Charity Bingo is every Wednesday night and is open to the public. Doors open at 4:30, early birds at 6:30 with regular games starting at 7 pm. The current charity is for Teigan Kinze, a 1 year old with many medical problems.

Parkinson's Support Group will be held the 3rd Wednesday each month at 2 pm at the Heritage House in Atlantic.

Sharing the Bounty - A free meal for the needy will be held the 1st Wednesday of the month from 5:30 - 6:30 pm at SS Peter & Paul Parish Center in Atlantic all ages are welcome.

The Atlantic Lions Club takes used eye glasses and hearing aids. You can drop them off at these Atlantic locations: Hy-Vee, W & S Appliance, Fareway, or any Lions Club member.

H1N1 and Seasonal Influenza vaccinations at Atlantic Medical Center

on a drop-in basis.  No appointment is necessary, and there will be no screening for priority groups.  Everyone is eligible to receive both vaccines, regardless of age or health status. Vaccine will be available at Atlantic Medical Center Monday – Friday from 8:30 – 11:30 am and 1:00 – 4:00 pm.  H1N1 vaccine is provided free of charge.  There is a charge of $30 for Seasonal Influenza vaccine, which will be submitted to eligible insurances, including Medicare, Medicaid, hawk-I, BCBS and others.  Payment is due at the time of service.
